Can artificial intelligence become a bridge to Buddhist philosophy—and what responsibilities accompany its use?

Artificial intelligence has rapidly become one of the defining technologies of our time. From image generation and filmmaking to education, healthcare, and scientific research, AI continues to transform the way knowledge is created, communicated, and experienced. Alongside these developments, it has also prompted global conversations surrounding copyright, authorship, misinformation, authenticity, and creativity.
These discussions are both necessary and important. They help society navigate the legal, social, and technological implications of rapidly evolving tools.
Yet behind these debates lies another question.
As technology expands our creative capabilities, what responsibilities accompany that new skill?
This question becomes particularly significant when technology enters the realms of philosophy, religion, and cultural heritage. Here, the discussion extends beyond technical capability to questions of intention, representation, and the responsibility of shaping how ideas, beliefs, and cultural traditions are understood.
Beyond the Veil approaches artificial intelligence from this perspective.
Pierre Au-Yeung employs AI as part of his artistic process, using it as a contemporary medium through which the philosophical ideas of the Diamond Sutra are reinterpreted for today's visual culture.
The exhibition does not ask whether artificial intelligence should replace artistic practice. Instead, it asks something else.
When technology expands our creative possibilities, how should we choose to use it?

Representation and Responsibility
Artificial intelligence has made image-making more accessible than ever before. Within seconds, it can generate visuals that once required years of technical skill and artistic training.
Technology, however, has never replaced human responsibility.
Every image communicates more than visual information. It reflects decisions—what is represented, how it is represented, and why it is represented. These decisions remain profoundly human, regardless of the technology used to produce the image.
This becomes especially significant when artists engage with religious and philosophical subjects.
Buddhist imagery has never existed merely for decoration. Throughout history, images of the Buddha, Guanyin, and other Buddhist figures have served as vehicles for contemplation, teaching, and cultural memory. Their significance lies not only in how they appear, but in the ideas they embody.
The artist's responsibility therefore extends beyond creating visually compelling images. It lies in considering whether the medium continues to communicate those ideas with integrity, respect, and thoughtful intention.
Within Beyond the Veil, AI is not employed to imitate Buddhist visual traditions.
Au-Yeung's works begin with photography—images captured over decades in temples, exhibitions, and places of worship. Artificial intelligence enters later in the creative process, extending rather than replacing the photographic image.
While the medium evolves, the responsibility to communicate these ideas with care remains unchanged.

Can AI Become a Contemporary Buddhist Medium?
Throughout history, Buddhist teachings have never been confined to a single artistic language.
Across centuries, Buddhist teachings have been expressed through sculpture, murals, calligraphy, woodblock printing, photography, and digital media. Each generation adopted the visual language of its own time while continuing to engage with ideas that remained remarkably consistent.
Artificial intelligence now enters this historical continuum.
Whether it should become part of contemporary Buddhist artistic practice remains an open conversation.
Beyond the Veil proposes that the significance of any artistic medium is determined less by its novelty than by the understanding it cultivates.
In Au-Yeung's practice, artificial intelligence is never the origin of the work, nor its destination.
It functions as another artistic medium—one through which familiar images may be encountered from new perspectives, inviting contemporary audiences into conversations that have continued across centuries.
The question therefore shifts from whether AI can generate Buddhist imagery to whether it can meaningfully deepen our engagement with Buddhist philosophy.

Ethical Responsibility Beyond the Image
Every technological advancement expands the possibilities available to artists.
Ethics determines how those possibilities are used.
Artificial intelligence can generate images.
It cannot determine why those images should exist.
It cannot determine what deserves to be represented, what requires sensitivity, or what ideas are worthy of being communicated.
Those decisions remain fundamentally human—and ultimately the responsibility of the artist.
For this reason, the ethical discussion surrounding AI cannot end with technology itself.
It must return to the people who choose to employ it.
Within Beyond the Veil, artificial intelligence serves a broader curatorial intention—to create another point of encounter between contemporary visual culture and the philosophical ideas explored within the Diamond Sutra.
The ethical question therefore moves beyond what AI can create.
It becomes a question of what artists choose to communicate, and ultimately, what viewers are invited to contemplate, question, and understand.

Beyond the Technology
Artificial intelligence will continue to evolve.
Its capabilities will expand.
New technologies will emerge, and artistic practice will continue to change alongside them.
The ethical questions surrounding these developments will only become more important.
Beyond the Veil does not argue that artificial intelligence is inherently beneficial, nor does it suggest that technological innovation should be embraced uncritically.
Instead, it proposes something simpler.
Technology transforms how we create.
It does not diminish our responsibility for why we create.
Viewed through the lens of Beyond the Veil, artificial intelligence is neither celebrated nor rejected.
It should be approached as any artistic medium should—with intention, responsibility, and humility.
Ultimately, the future of artificial intelligence will not be defined by what machines become capable of creating, but by the values humanity chooses to uphold through them.
